strike out at (something or some place)
1. To fail to achieve or succeed in something at a particular location, event, environment, etc. An allusion to baseball, in which "striking out" means failing to hit the ball three times, resulting in an out. The eighth film in the horror series struck out at the box office, failing to get anywhere near its estimated budget. It was a disappointing night for the new Broadway musical, which completely struck out at the Tonys last night.
2. To fail to find what one was seeking at a particular location. A: "Did you manage to find any fresh mangoes?" B: "No, not yet. I struck out at out local supermarket, so I'm going to go check the farmers' market in town."
