old-fashioned A firearm, especially a pistol or revolver. The sheriff opened up his jacket to reveal his shooting iron, warning Black-Eye Jack not to start any trouble while he was in town. A single shot from the officer's shooting iron was enough to disperse the crowd of onlookers.
