sock hop

dated A school dance, typically one held in the school gymnasium. At one time, students were required to remove their shoes to avoid damaging the gym floor, and thus danced in their socks. Popular in the 1950s, the term now usually refers to events meant to emulate the aesthetic of that time. Primarily heard in US. The student council originally wanted to make the homecoming dance a sock hop, but I told them no teenager would want to come to that.

A school dance. Back in the days when school dances were held in gymnasiums, students were requested to remove their shoes, which would otherwise scratch the varnished and polished floor. It being the bobby-sox era, kids Lindy-hopped and slow-danced in their socked feet, and the events became known as sock hops.
