stand on (one's) head

To turn one's body upside down and remain vertical while balancing on nothing but one's head and hands. I've never been able to stand on my head for more than a couple seconds. The street performer stood on his head while a live monkey balanced on his outstretched feet.

1. Lit. to stand or balance vertically with one's head and hands—rather than one's feet—touching the floor. Can you stand on your head? Todd stood on his head as a form of exercise.
2. Fig. to attempt to impress someone by hard work or difficult feats. You don't have to stand on your head to succeed in this office. Just do your assigned work on time.
