put in for (something)

To request, ask for, or apply for something. I'm putting in for a position in the company's office in California. You can put in for a raise, but I doubt the board of directors would approve it.

to apply for something; to make a request for something. I put in for a transfer, but I bet I don't get it. She put in for a new file cabinet, but she never got one.
