pull a boner

To make a foolish, silly error or blunder; to do something stupid. This phrase, originally derived from "bonehead," has become much less common in recent years due to the slang term "boner," meaning an erect penis. Boy, I really pulled a boner bringing up my arrest during the job interview. No, I'm not mad—you weren't trying to cause trouble, you just pulled a boner. We've all done stupid things like that in the past.
