To strike or hammer someone or something repeatedly and with unrestrained force. Often followed by "at/on someone or something." He poured the corn into the mortar and pounded away with the pestle. The gangster started pounding away on some poor guy who had just tripped and spilled his drink. We pounded away at the sheet of rock beneath the soil, but we just couldn't penetrate it.
