on (one's) own hook

Without requiring or having been given instruction, prompting, or guidance from others; by one's own effort or energy. Few things impress employers more than implementing business solutions on your own hook. I just think Jennifer needs to do things on her own hook more, instead of waiting to see what her boyfriend wants to do all the time.

If you do something on your own hook, you do it alone, without any help. Patients generally get to the hospital on their own hook. Note: The reference here is to someone catching a fish using their own equipment and without help from others.
