on the home stretch

In the midst of the final portion of an activity, project, competition, etc. Likened to the straightaway at the end of a race. The bulk of the work is behind us now—we're on the home stretch now!

on the ˌhome ˈstraight/ˈstretch

approaching the end of a task, project, course, etc: Ten exams done and two more to do — you’re on the home straight now. I never thought the prison sentence would end, but I feel I’m on the home straight now.
This refers to the last part of a horse race when the horses are approaching the finishing line.
