on the beat

1. Keeping time with the rhythm of a song. We're going to go through the dance routine once more—let's try to stay on the beat this time, people!
2. Regularly patrolling a certain area. When used in this way, the phrase is usually applied to police officers. I always see police officers on the beat in our neighborhood.
