To not be at a satisfactory or requisite level; to not successfully complete or accomplish a desired or expected result. The underdog gave a brilliant performance in the ring, but he just could not cut it against the returning champion. I have to warn you, Jenkins, your last few reports haven't quite cut it. You're going to need to improve if you want to keep your job here.

If you say that someone cannot cut it or does not cut it, you mean that they are not talented or ambitious enough to succeed in a particular job. We're in a real mess now Johnny's gone. Lorenzo's been doing the vocals, but he just can't cut it. It's a very tough work environment. If you don't cut it then you're out.
