oil and water do not mix

Said of two objects, elements, factors, forces, people, etc., that do not or cannot mix together readily. Refers to the natural tendency of oil and water to separate. I don't know how my dad and my mom's boyfriend are going to get through the family reunion in each other's company—oil and water do not mix.
