luff up
1. To turn into the wind while sailing. The frigate started luffing up ahead of us, cutting across our ship's path.
2. To direct the helm of a sailing vessel toward the wind. In this usage, a noun or pronoun can be used between "luff" and "up." We'll want to luff the boat up closer to the wind to slow us down.
