Chance, especially that which is solely responsible for determining a result or outcome. It was just the luck of the draw that my roommate in college ended up being one of my closest friends for the rest of my life. No one gets to choose the family they're born into—it's just the luck of the draw.

If something is the luck of the draw, it depends on chance and there is nothing you can do to influence it. It's largely the luck of the draw what kind of child we get. Sometimes you can see a doctor immediately, and sometimes you have to wait for hours. It's the luck of the draw really. Note: This expression refers to the act of drawing (=taking) a card at random from a pack of playing cards.
