make things hot for (one)

To pressure one or otherwise make them uncomfortable, usually in an attempt to make them change their behavior or act in a certain way. The other students decided to make things hot for the classroom bully so he'd stop picking on the younger kids. If we want this guy to confess, we need to make things hot for him in the interrogation room.
