To intentionally overlook a wrongdoing, break in regulation, etc.; to ignore something that one has a responsibility to report or enforce. I know I didn't follow the rules, but can't you just look the other way? All these predators got away with it because administrators just looked the other way and pretended it wasn't happening.

2. Fig. to ignore something on purpose. John could have prevented the problem, but he looked the other way. By looking the other way, he actually made the problem worse.

COMMON If someone looks the other way, they deliberately ignore something bad that is happening when they should be trying to deal with it or stop it. The government are fully aware of the problem but they just look the other way. I was always in trouble. Most of the time, we just paid the police to look the other way. Note: You usually use this expression to suggest that this is a bad thing to do.
