make (one's) own way

To advance or progress, especially through life, according to one's own efforts, inclinations, or designs. This country prides itself on letting people make their own way, relying on no one else's work but their own. We've tried to give Jack all the guidance and support we can, but at the end of the day, he has to make his own way in the world.
