killing pace, a

An extremely fast or hectic rate. Originally referring to the breakneck speed of a horse or human being, leading to exhaustion, this expression was by the mid-nineteenth century being transferred to any human endeavor. “You can’t keep up the pace . . . it will kill you,” wrote Thackeray (Pendennis, 1850).
