kick over

1. To upset or topple something by kicking it. In this usage, a noun or pronoun can be used between "kick" and "over." Kids, don't kick over the trash can!
2. verb To start working, usually of an engine. I always have a hard time getting my engine to kick over on cold mornings like this.

v.
1. To kick something so that it falls on its side: Don't put your glass on the carpet—someone might accidentally kick it over. The playful children kicked over the statue, and it shattered into pieces.
2. To begin to fire or turn. Used of engines: We gave it one last crank, and the old engine kicked over.
