hold up as (something)
1. To work properly or effectively as a particular kind of thing. It's obvious that they are trying to establish a larger franchise and mythos, but the film just does not hold up as a stand-alone product. The senator delivered a rousing and emotionally driven speech, but it simply doesn't hold up as a manifesto for her political intentions. The famous carmaker's newest model is sleek and stylish while still holding up as a family-oriented SUV.
2. To use or emphasize someone or something as a model or peerless example of something else. In this usage, a noun or pronoun can be used between "hold" and "up." They're always holding my sister up as some paragon of success and good behavior, which makes me feel like a real failure. They love to hold the era up as the best the country has ever been, but there were myriad issues plaguing all levels of society back then, too.
3. To continue to be a good example or instance of something despite the changes in tastes and standards that occur with the passage of time. Sure, its effects seem a little dated now and the plot is a bit silly, but I think it still holds up as one of the all-time great action movies. It's really entertaining to watch now, but it certainly does not hold up as a serious drama anymore.
