hold (someone or something) out of (something)

To prevent someone or something from being included in some situation, activity, process, environment, etc. I heard that Sarah's parents are holding her out of play rehearsals because she has the mumps. We're holding the new model out of production until we can nail down the cause of these malfunctions.
