Used to introduce a statement that one thinks might offend someone, seem insensitive, or come across as immodestly authoritative. Primarily heard in UK. Look, I'm not being funny, but Tom's just not been himself since he started dating Angela. I'm not being funny, but this restaurant is not at all as good as it used to be. I'm not being funny, but how a Member of Parliament can be so ignorant of the facts is quite beyond me.
