To strongly desire something. Want to stop at McDonald's? I'm hungering after some of their fries. If she's not hungering after a medal, there's no way she'll be able to beat her fellow competitors.

Fig. to crave for something, not necessarily food. I hunger after some old-fashioned gospel music. Mary hungered after something fattening, such as ice cream or even a baked potato with sour cream.
