One's permanent residence. Used especially in the phrases "be out of house and home" and "eat (one) out of house and home." I wasn't expecting to spend so much money on food when I agreed to host the two teenagers from America. They're going to eat us out of house and home! Several hundred students may suddenly be out of house and home after the university-owned apartment building failed to pass its annual health and safety inspection on Friday.
