To have or obtain helpful information about someone or something. I've got a line on a few job opportunities in the city. John says he can get a line on a guy who can fix the car for half the price.

mainly AMERICAN, INFORMAL
If you get a line on someone or something, you get some information about them. We've been trying to get a line on you, and the more we try, the less we find. Note: You can say that you have a line on someone or something if you have some information about them. I really don't have a line on what's going to happen yet.
