give (something) against (one)
give (something) against (one)
1. To provide something that incriminates or proves the guilt of one. The District Attorney wants me to give evidence against the Mafia. Would you be willing to give testimony against your former business partner?
2. To issue a penalty against one. A number of citations and fines have been given against the company already. I think that the referee gave us some really unfair fouls in our game last night.
