To stare intently at something or someone, often because one is awestruck or dumbfounded. I couldn't help but gaze open-mouthed at the beautiful sunrise.

Certainly some of the bodies on display are wondrous in the extreme (and we're not talking women's heavyweight weightlifting here), as is the skill involved in certain of the entertainments (table tennis, for example, which you can laugh at and call 'ping-pong' if you like, but which, at the top level, makes such demands, both physical and mental, that those of us whose idea of a demonstration of lightning reaction speed involves nothing much more than catching a bit of half-dropped toast can only gaze open-mouthed).
