To give one an advantage over another person or thing; to allow one to catch someone or something in a vulnerable position or situation. We gave the police the jump on us by accidentally leaving evidence behind at the motel. Our competitors' recent legal troubles gave us the jump on them, allowing us to get our product to market first.
