He would also be determined to see the never-ending Black Twitter chat, the many marches and protests of 2018, and the overall resistance to Trump as proof his lifetime of work attempting to unify the Black community could, if not would, survive and thrive in his very notable absence.

Among the black diaspora this is especially significant, particularly in spaces like Black Twitter where the use of memes in conversations surrounding holiday pastimes (#ThanksgivingWithBlackFamilies) or lifestyle customs (#DuragHistoryWeek) are reflective of specific social and political modes that inform--by speaking to, from, and expanding on--black identity.

Overall, the academic analyses of the impact of social media on the Ferguson story celebrate the success of "Black Twitter" in countering what many communications scholars see as the corporate, anti-protest, pro-government slant of the mainstream media.

"Black Twitter has gone from being seen as these frivolous conversations that black people are having at night," said Sherri Williams, a post-doctoral fellow and professor at Wake Forest University who was among the panelist at the conference.

"For the record, I like Black Twitter. But if you're going to dish it out, you've got to take it too.

More specifically, I focus on the phenomenon of 'Black Twitter' that has become evident, principally in relation to the relative magnitude of Black (especially African-American) activity, and in particular the creation of certain kinds of 'hashtags'.
