get to the top (of something)

1. Literally, to move to or reach the highest point of something. I was completely exhausted by the time we got to the top of the climbing wall.
2. By extension, to become important, renowned, or celebrated in some field or area. Don't get discouraged, it takes time to get to the top. You have a lot of competition—every doctor here is working to get to the top of their field.

1. Lit. to get to the highest point of something. We finally got to the top of the mountain and planted the flag. We had tried twice before to get to the top.
2. Fig. to work up to the highest status in something. She got to the top of her field in a very short time. It takes hard work to get to the top.
