citation needed

slang Used to indicate that some piece of writing or speech lacks credibility or seems dubious. A reference to the notes left beside facts in Wikipedia articles that lack citations. Often used humorously or sarcastically. A: "Don't you know that 10 million people die of contaminated water in this country each year?" B: "Really, 10 million people? Citation needed, dude." A: "Smell that fresh air! It's so wonderful being out on a hike first thing in the morning, huh kids?" B: "Citation needed."
