be (one's) life

To be one's main vocation, passion, or pursuit; to be one's main focus in life. My thesis has been my life for the last two years, so I'm thrilled to finally be done with it—and a little scared. Teaching is Brian's life. If he has to retire, he'll be lost. I know your kids are your life, but you should make time for your own interests sometimes.
