COMMON If a question or remark is left hanging in the air, it is not answered or discussed. The presenter made intelligent points but never challenged anybody, so we were left with a lot of questions hanging in the air. He looked at neither of them but left his remark hanging in the air. Note: You can also say that a question or remark hangs in the air. `We are losing our sense of the eternal. I think it's a loss that has done a great deal of damage to modern art.' His words hung enigmatically in the air.
