To be in an extremely and increasingly bad or ruinous condition; to be on the inevitable path to utter failure or ruin. With the way he's running things, the company is going to hell sooner than later! If you look at all that's happening right now, you can't tell me this country isn't going to hell.

be going to hell
If something is going to hell, it is being destroyed. The country is going to hell and our leaders are doing nothing to stop it. Note: You can also say that something or someone is going to hell in a handbasket or is going to hell in a handcart. The whole health service is going to hell in a handbasket. I don't know what the world's coming to — we're all going to hell in a handcart. Compare with go to hell.
