CAVOK

CAVOK

An acronym for the phrase "ceiling (cloud level) and visibility OK," used in aviation to refer to conditions in which visibility is at least 10 kilometers, there are no clouds below 5000 feet, and there is no precipitation or other inclement weather patterns. Pronounced "kav-oh-kay" (/?kæv?o?'ke?/). We're waiting for a CAVOK on the METAR before we attempt a takeoff. Just because the airfield is reporting CAVOK does not mean you won't run into hairy conditions if you're coming in from higher altitudes.
