coal in (one's) stocking
coal in (one's) stocking
1. What naughty children are said to receive from Santa Claus. When the kids are acting up during the holidays, I just tell them they're going to get coal in their stockings if they keep it up—works every time!
2. By extension, some punishment or undesirable outcome as a result of one's behavior or conduct. With a jail sentence looming, it seems like the greedy CEO who defrauded the company will be getting coal in his stockings this year.
