To be very risky, uncertain, or unlikely to succeed. (Of an attempt, proposition, or guess.) I know this is a long shot, but would you like to go out on a date with me sometime? The proposed tax law is a bit of a long shot from Democrats, as it is unlikely to be met with much support by the Republicans in Congress.
