don't buy a pig in a poke

don't buy a pig in a poke

Don't buy something without inspecting it thoroughly. The phrase refers to a confidence trick in which people would buy what they thought was a pig in a bag (or "poke") and later found that the bag actually contained a cat. You really ought to do some research on the condition of the house before buying it. Don't just buy a pig in a poke!
