hanging in chains

hanging in chains

A method of execution by which one is suspended from a gibbet (a wooden structure similar to a gallows) in chains for public viewing. Also called "gibbeting." I am so glad to live in the modern age when I hear about bygone punishments like hanging in chains. Saying so much as a word against the king was enough to have one left hanging in chains.
