An overwhelming situation in which one has taken on more responsibility than one can handle or is facing more trouble or danger than expected. I've been in deep water ever since I volunteered to lead this committee—it has been so much more work than I anticipated. I thought I could make some easy cash by selling drugs, but now I'm in deep water with some big-time thugs.
