1. Literally, to bounce or be jostled while traveling on an uneven surface. My car bumped along the stretch of road where the construction crew was working.
2. By extension, to proceed in a chaotic or nonlinear manner, as of a task or situation. The project just bumped along for months until we finally got the funding we needed.
